Stunna Shades

Readers-do you all have any big Memorial Day plans? I recently got a job at a local gift shop, so I'm just excited for a day off!

Everyone knows Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and sunglasses are summer's unofficial accessory so I thought I'd do a post about my favorite lenses. When it comes to shades, I like to stick to the classics-Ray-bans are my brand of choice. I, like Tom Cruise in Risky Business, rock the original Wayfarers ($145). Universally flattering, these frames look good on nearly everyone and are classic enough to complete a variety of outfits.

If Wayfarers aren't your style, try on a pair of Aviators ($139). Ray-Ban invented this style of sunglasses in 1936 for military pilots, but when celebrities like Michael Jackson and the cast of Top Gun were seen sporting them in the 1980s, they became a popular civilian fashion trend and have been ever since.

Both of these styles come in bright colors and there are several Wayfarer options with prints, but if you're only going to buy one pair, I recommend sticking with neutral frames. Knock offs and imitations are readily available for both of these styles, so if you're looking for a super cheap buy, you're in luck. If you have a little more cash to spend, Ray-Bans are worth the investment--I wear mine constantly.

Finally, if anyone is looking for some last-minute Memorial Day food ideas, check out my friend Perry's suggestions on the Coast Living website!

Graduation Gift Ideas

It's that time of year, again. Vitamin C is playing, caps are flying and cigars are smoking. It's graduation season. As a rising senior in college, I get the following question often: "What is a graduation gift that will actually get some use once the recipient goes off to school?" Here are my suggestions for gifts I would have loved to receive the summer before my freshman year:

$25 and under:Extra cups always come in handy around the dorm room, making a personalized Tervis Tumbler a great gift idea for a high school grad. Not only are these cups microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe, personalization is only $5 extra and will help ensure the cup doesn't mysteriously walk away from the owner at the end of a dinner party. ($16 plus $5 personalization)

No matter how good a school's cafeteria is, the food is bound to get old about halfway through second semester of freshman year. That's where this next gift idea comes in handy. A recipe book, like this one from Etsy, filled with some dorm-friendly recipes provides a perfect alternative to the monotony of the dining hall. ($15.95)
Like the Tervis Tumbler, a set of microwave-safe bowls are perfect for everything from ice cream to Campbell's chicken noodle. I'm partial to these Latte Bowls from Anthropologie. ($20 per set of 4 bowls)

$25-$50:Making a trek to the community bathroom is made much easier and more stylish with a
monogrammed towel wrap. I received one before I went to college and it has been my most-used gift by far. ($45)
Pearl studs are a fashion choice that instantly adds a touch of class to any outfit. Not to mention, they go with everything from a little black dress to a t-shirt and jeans. Overstock.com has several options available at heavily discounted prices. ($29.49 and up)

Over $50:

I'm not tech-savvy, so I won't make any suggestions as to which brand is best, but having a laptop computer with me at college has been unbelievably helpful. If at all possible, I suggest bringing one with you to school. That being said, it would make a great graduation gift.

Any denomination:
College students are notoriously broke, so monetary gifts are always warmly accepted, regardless of denomination. The same goes for gift cards. Specifically, cards from Target, Walgreens, Office Depot, local grocery stores, gas stations, or favorite clothing stores would all be great gifts.

PS I just figured out how to check the traffic for this blog and I'm so excited you all are enjoying my site! I'd really appreciate it if you'd become a follower-- in the future I hope to have a contest that will be exclusive to followers of style of a 20 something like this one over at anthrosdottir! Thanks for reading!

Ok, Ok, I'll Admit It.

I'm a huge English nerd. Not to mention I'm fresh off two back-to-back semesters of Shakespeare, so I found these comedy sketches especially entertaining. Enjoy!

Gaga Oh La La!!

As illustrated by tonight's episode of Glee, Lady Gaga's fashion choices are eclectic to say the least, but she and I are kindred spirits in one regard. Bows. How fabulous is Gaga's literal hair bow? Unfortunately, I don't have a team of personal stylists to recreate the look on a daily basis, so I have to channel my bow-loving energy in other ways:

Old Meets New

Facebook just told me to "like" the Charlotte Brontë classic: Jane Eyre. So strange. While I have no idea what the famed author would think of our culture's obsession with social media sites, I'm fairly certain she'd love the Penguin Classics edition of her most well-known work.

It's available from Anthropologie ($20), but if you're willing to wait, Amazon has the same book for $13.60 with free shipping. I was given Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility for my birthday, but I'd love to collect the whole set. How pretty would the whole collection look all lined up on a shelf?

Links to Beat Those Monday Morning Blues

In an homage to my favorite blogger, Joanna Goddard of A Cup of Jo and her fabulous weekend posts, I decided to throw together a group of my favorite posts from around the web to help you beat your Monday blues!

Every time I see this advertisement I get goosebumps. I can't wait until the World Cup begins!

How cute are these bows? I've always loved Disney princesses- I just wish it were socially acceptable for me to wear bows in public!

Love. Love. Love. Love. Love.

My favorite parts of last nights Lost finale were Target's clever commercials.

I'm swooning over dresses from Old Age Vintage. Especially this one.

The most useful girly graduation gift.

Guy Fieri to feature Nashville barbecue tonight at 9 p.m. central on Food Network.

Yum. And how perfect for Memorial Day?

Sex and the City Does Anthropologie

I've been anxiously awaiting the new Sex and the City movie, stalking trailers whenever I get a chance. Not to mention today's marathon on TBS isn't helping. My friends all agree I'm totally a "Charlotte" so her apron in this preview caught my eye:

And then I remembered where I recognized those cute cupcakes from. It's the Baker's Delight Apron ($32) from Anthropologie! I'd go out and buy it right now, but I'm waiting to hear back from my local store's employment team. Cupcakes look much cuter with an employee discount.

I'm craving Karla's bag because I need a new clutch, but I'd love to own any of these purses. Check out the bags below--they're now available for pre-order on Coach's website.

Craving Tea and Crumpets

I had lunch today with my friend Lauren who is headed to London in a few weeks for a study abroad program--I was giving her a quick run-down of the city since I was just there for four months in the fall. Just talking about it was making me so London-sick! So I started looking for that perfect British accessory to add to my room at school. What do you think of these?

Fashion for a Cause

In case you missed the snippets of media coverage Nashville received, my hometown suffered severe damage from flash flooding on May 2 and 3. Lives were lost, property was destroyed, and homes were devastated, but Music City is rising to the occasion. Volunteers have been working hard to help victims, but monetary donations are essential to the rebuild process. Damages are estimated at over 1 billion dollars, so every donation helps. Donate here and here or just go shopping! There are quite a few sites offering to donate a portion of sales to victims of the flood.

Nashville native Caldwell Tanner designed this poster and is offering to donate 100% of the proceeds to flood relief.

Spirit of Nashville has come out with two prints benefiting victims of the flooding.

This would be a perfect bumper sticker.

And how cute are these shirts?

With only a part-time internship lined up for this summer, I'm in desperate need of a project. So I'd like to formally welcome you to my fashion writing experiment: style of a 20-something. If you don't like what you read, well, the next post is on me.
